Hospital: PAM Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Greater Indiana South
Diagnosis: Spinal cord infarction
While undergoing cervical spine surgery, Jason Porter suffered a spinal cord infarction, a “stroke” affecting the spinal cord. He emerged from surgery paralyzed from his shoulders down, and while in the acute care hospital recovering, only slightly regained movement in his arms and legs.
Mr. Porter chose PAM Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Greater Indiana for the next phase of his recovery after hearing great reviews. When he arrived at PAM Health, he will still unable to feel his hands and feet with minimal feeling in his arms, legs, trunk, and abdomen. Previously completely independent, Mr. Porter was faced with the scary reality of not being able to do the things he once could, including “normal” daily tasks like walking and feeding himself. Armed with his enduring sense of humor, a positive, motivated mindset, and the compassionate, encouragement, and expertise of our therapists, Mr. Porter got to work to regain his mobility, function, and independence. During the course of his stay, he relearned how to walk, stand up, and move around in bed, even progressing to being completely independent with these tasks. He also regained his ability to do activities of daily living like feeding himself (with some support) and brushing his teeth.
Mr. Porter appreciated the “exceptional” care he received at PAM Health across the board from all departments, from his therapists to our medical staff to housekeeping and dietary. “I’ll remember how nice and detail-oriented everyone was,” Mr. Porter said. Plus, his spacious, welcoming room at PAM Health made his stay that much more positive!
A “normal working man and provider” to his family, including three kids, Mr. Porter leaves PAM Health with a new outlook – one in which he doesn’t take for granted his independence in doing life’s everyday activities. We were inspired to witness Mr. Porter’s kind heart and giving nature during his time at PAM Health and wish him all the continued success he deserves!
