Hospital: PAM Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Winter Garden
Diagnosis: UTI with sepsis
On March 11, 2025, PAM Health Rehabilitation Hospital in Winter Garden, Florida, proudly opened its doors to its very first patient, Mrs. Candie Broxson. At 64 years old, Mrs. Broxson faced numerous health challenges, including diabetes, hyperlipidemia, end-stage renal disease requiring peritoneal dialysis, and neuropathy. Mrs. Broxson was hospitalized after a severe episode of abdominal pain during a home dialysis session promted her to seek emergency care. At the acute care hospital, Mrs. Broxson was diagnosed with an acute severe urinary tract infection, hyponatremia, anion gap metabolic acidosis, anemia, sepsis, small-volume ascites (fluid accumulation in the abdominal cavity), and cholelithiasis (gallstones). Further evaluation revealed hemorrhagic cystitis with sepsis, necessitating immediate hospital admission and treatment.
Following her initial treatment, Mrs. Broxson was transferred to our brand new state-of-the-art inpatient rehabilitation hospital. Upon admission, she was weak, barely able to get out of bed, and required a walker or mobility. She also had impaired balance and low back pain, requiring partial assistance with bathing and dressing.
At PAM Health, Mrs. Broxson received exceptional nursing care and comprehensive rehabilitation through physical and occupational therapy. Her primary goal was to return home at her prior level of independence. Through her determination and the unwavering support of the PAM Health team, Mrs. Broxson made remarkable progress. She gradually regained her strength, improved her balance, and became more independent in her daily activities. She achieved walking more than 200 feet without an assistive device and could complete all her bathing and dressing tasks independently.
Mrs. Broxson plans to continue her journey with outpatient physical and occupational therapy at a sister PAM Health hospital. She is working toward her ultimate goal of being able to drive to Publix and shop with a shopping cart (and not a mobility scooter!), and she is well on her way to achieving her shopping goals! Mrs. Broxson’s success story is an inspiring example of overcoming adversity to reach tremendous milestones. We here at PAM Health wish her happiness and good health as she continues on her journey!
