Pride in Identity and Quality Healthcare

Stethoscope and Rainbow

Pride Month in June is a time to celebrate and unapologetically embrace your true self. For those who may not celebrate it themselves, the time is always right to champion loved ones and friends who are a part of the LGBTQIA+ community, support LGBTQIA+ organizations, work to educate others on key issues, and continue to rally behind the message of equality for all.

But observing the above is not limited to one month alone – pride is something to celebrate and fight for year-round. In healthcare, each day presents providers with the critical opportunity to eliminate discrepancies among the quality of healthcare provided to LGBTQIA+ patients.

In 2020 alone, one third of LGBTQ+ Americans reported they had experienced discrimination based on their identity, with 50% sharing such discrimination occurred in public. The impact of such treatment toward those who identify as LGBTQ+ can lead millions of individuals to experience mental health struggles each year.

In the long term, individuals who are struggling with their mental health may experience anxiety, depression, eating disorders, or substance abuse. These issues can lead to poor physical health and cause prolonged issues for the LGBTQIA+ community, who are already less likely to have access to health insurance. These individuals may also be less likely to seek treatment for healthcare issues due to fear of stigmatization or discrimination.

PAM Health (PAM) is committed to aiding those who may be struggling through their identity journey through the high-quality services we provide our patients. Additionally, PAM remains determined to serve the LGBTQIA+ population across all levels of care.
