Anthony Upton: PAM Health Specialty and Rehabilitation Hospitals of Miamisburg

Anthony Upton

Hospital: PAM Health Specialty and Rehabilitation Hospitals of Miamisburg

Diagnosis: Debility from gunshot injuries; Wound care

Anthony Upton was shot multiple times in September 2025, suffering severe injuries to his chest, neck, and hand. After spending some time in the acute care hospital, Mr. Upton came to PAM Health Specialty Hospital of Miamisburg to receive the intensive, advanced care he still required to heal.

One of the main focuses upon Mr. Upton’s arrival at  our long-term acute care (LTACH) unit were his 11 gunshot wounds, which were still in critical condition. A failing flap on one of his wounds needed urgently addressed, and our expert wound care team diligently ensured Mr. Upton’s healing progress. By discharge, all of his wounds were healed!

Mr. Upton’s complex condition also left him debilitated, in a foggy mental state, and requiring ventilator support. Our expert respiratory and rehabilitation teams across both our LTACH and inpatient rehab unit supported his steady progress, making “everyday a little better,” Mr. Upton shared. His strength, function, alertness, and breathing all improved. Thanks to our speech therapy team, he began talking and drinking again and making progress toward a normal diet after his trach was removed.

Mr. Upton felt as though our team saved his life, and he was grateful for their dedication and unwavering support through his challenges. He especially praised our “great therapy and nursing” teams. He recalls our staff from our LTACH unit coming to visit him on our rehab floor, which boosted his spirit and meant so much to him. Mr. Upton also fondly remembers fun therapy exercises with Kayla, including arm wrestling – a creative technique for helping him rebuild strength! With his restored independence, Mr. Upton simply wants to “get out and just live!” We fully support that goal, Mr. Upton, and we are so thrilled to have been part of your story.
