Hospital: PAM Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Humble

Diagnosis: Meningitis and encephalitis secondary

Robert McCann became ill with West Nile virus, which led to meningitis and encephalitis, and was hospitalized on September 2, 2024. His insurance initially denied him for inpatient rehabilitation, and he was discharged instead to a skilled nursing facility, only to be re-hospitalized two weeks later due to gastrointestinal bleeding. With his conditioning deteriorating and feeling frustrated with resistance from their insurance, Mr. McCann and his wife took matters into their own hands, independently choosing inpatient rehabilitation at PAM Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Humble. They were optimistic about our private rooms, positive reviews, and our expert therapy team.

The McCanns’ choice to come to PAM Health was affirmed as our team, specifically case manger Kristin and Dr. Pointdexter, fought insurance alongside them, eventually leading to Mr. McCanns’ whole stay being covered! With that massive cost burden lifted, Mr. McCann could focus on his physical recovery and working to regain his previous independence. Upon admission, he required maximum assistance with mobility and self-care tasks. In therapy, Mr. McCann focused on learning to walk again. He progressed from standing in the parallel bars to walking with the motorized platform walker. By week two, he learned to get out of bed himself, stand and walk using a walker, and get in the car independently.

He was grateful for his therapy team made up of Lisa, Mary, Shelby, and Landry.  Mrs. McCann added: “The staff is very supportive and friendly. The doctors and medical team really cared for my husband and me. We are retired and on a tight budget. We appreciate that they fought for us to have my husband hospital stay get fully covered by insurance.”

Mr. McCann looks forward to just being home, where he hasn’t been for more than two months. “We can plan our Europe vacation now!” he said. We are honored to have been entrusted with Mr. McCann’s remarkable recovery.
