Diagnosis: Left below the knee amputation
Following an infection in his left leg due to diabetes, Mr. Dominguez faced the challenge of recovering from an amputation. This presented a myriad of challenges, one of which was the large adjustment to his overall ability to move. After the surgery, Mr. Dominguez chose PAM Health Rehabilitation Hospital of El Paso for his recovery.
When he first entered the hospital, Mr. Dominguez was still on oxygen, making his initial therapy sessions exceptionally difficult. Combined with the mental challenges associated with the amputation, his recovery process was anything but smooth. In fact, he had a hard time envisioning returning to a sense of normalcy or walking again. Enter the PAM Health therapists who supported him on his recovery journey and restored his morale.
After multiple therapy sessions, Mr. Dominguez was able to move again. Once he was weaned off his supplemental oxygen, he progressed rapidly. One transformative therapy tool was the Barihab, which is a supportive table therapists use to safely facilitate exercises promoting mobility and strength. As a result of his hard work and innovative technologies, Mr. Dominquez was able to walk again and regain much of his overall functioning. Being able to walk again was a monumental accomplishment, helping restore his confidence and propel him to doing things he once thought impossible.
Mr. Dominguez appreciated how much the therapy, dialysis, and nursing teams cared for and helped him as well as their positive attitudes. Their encouragement and optimism allowed him to change his mindset to adapt to his new normal and envision the possibilities before him – not the limitations. Additionally, he enjoyed the nutritious meals and valued the time-saving convenience of having access to multiple services in one place.
With his inpatient stay behind him, Mr. Dominguez wants to return to PAM Health for outpatient therapy because of the advanced care available. We are so proud of your journey and wish you the best, Mr. Dominguez!
