Hospital: PAM Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Henderson
Diagnosis: Incomplete spinal cord injury to cervical spine; Incomplete quadriplegia
After taking an Epsom salt bath and drying off, Marvin Campbell’s blood pressure suddenly dropped. He got lightheaded, fell, and hit the toilet. He was rushed to the hospital where he needed spinal cord decompression surgery to relieve the pressure on his pinched spinal cord. Suffering an incomplete spinal cord injury to his cervical spine, the accident impacted the way Mr. Campbell’s brain and spinal cord communicate to one another. Some messages will go to or from the brain to the spinal cord and others will not, which means Mr. Campbell is an incomplete quadriplegic with partial paralysis. After his initial hospitalization, he was receiving home health, and they suggested he come to PAM Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Henderson for more intensive therapy to maximize his potential.
After spending 33 days as an inpatient at PAM Health Henderson, Mr. Campbell made tremendous progress. Upon admission, he could not stand, walk, get up, or feed himself. By the time of his discharge, he was able to get up on his feet, stand unassisted, walk a few steps, and eat a whole meal by himself. Mr. Campbell said the care, attention, encouragement, and love the custodians, nurses, and therapists all gave him made a huge difference during his inpatient stay. Everyone was so motivating and inspiring and worked together to make his progress happen.
Now back at home, Mr. Campbell chose to continue his outpatient therapy at PAM Health Henderson. He loves how his physical and occupational therapists are positive but tough with him, challenging him to push himself further. He always looks forward to his treatments, even telling his friends he gets to go to “Camp PAM.”
A previous member of the fire department and a former football official for SNOA, Mr. Campbell said his son told him he’s the one coaching his dad now. He said he can feel himself getting stronger and more flexible and likes seeing how the PAM Health team is so happy to see him and genuinely excited to see him succeed. For instance, he was recently able to attend his granddaughter’s first birthday party and see and talk to people he had not seen in a long time. He’s hoping the day will come when he can return to golf and spending even more time with his grandkids.
