Reason for Admission: Recovery after surgery for metastatic tumor of left proximal femur
Hospital: PAM Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Victoria
After a complex cancer diagnosis, Leonard Popp had to undergo surgery to remove a metastatic tumor in the area of his left proximal femur. The intensive surgery left him with post-operative medical needs and restrictions, pain management needs, and extreme functional limitations. As Mr. Popp was exploring inpatient rehabilitation options, he got a recommendation from his father-in-law about PAM Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Victoria – he had a great previous experience with us.
Mr. Popp arrived at PAM Health eager to rebuild his strength and independence and care for himself again. He felt some frustration and discouragement at not being able to do much on his own anymore, compounded by the uncertainty of his health condition. Our welcoming team of experts compassionately helped Mr. Popp address his concerns through targeted therapy and managing his pain while adhering to post-operative restrictions. Over the course of his week-plus stay, Mr. Popp made tremendous gains. A major highlight was being cleared to “green” status, opening up the door to more opportunities in therapy. He progressed from walking just 40 feet at admission to 360 feet with a walker by the end of his stay, as well as navigating stairs with significantly improved independence. He drew inspiration from other fellow patients and was bolstered even more by our staff’s “willingness to work together,” which he feels contributed to the “awesome” care he received. “Every treats me like family,” he said. Mr. Popp particularly appreciated Rob for making him “feel like a person again” through personalized, collaborative care and compassion. Our clean and comfortable amenities also helped him feel confident in the care he was getting.
“Everyone treats me like family.”

Upon returning home, Mr. Popp looks forward to playing music again and going on long walks with his dog, and we feel confident he will soon be able to resume these activities that are not just good for the body but also for the soul! We are so proud to have helped Mr. Popp feel like himself again after his diagnosis and surgery and wish him all the best in the future!
