Hospital: PAM Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Corpus Christi
Diagnosis: Spinal cord injury; Wound care for foot ulcers
After experiencing a spinal cord injury, Carlos Ortiz was told he would never walk again. He was depressed and laid in bed for 4.5 years. During that time, he developed ulcers on his feet, which required outpatient wound care for more than a year at PAM Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Corpus Christi until they healed. He also received therapy using the Ekso robotic exoskeleton several times. The first time he was only able to walk about 36 feet, but he progressed to being able to walk 600 feet using it thanks to staff encouragement. They made him feel good about himself and that they cared about him.
