Hospital: PAM Health Warm Springs Rehabilitation Hospital of San Antonio
Diagnosis: Ataxia after spinal surgery
Alfreda Carpenter, originally from the Philippines, needed rehab after a spinal surgery, and her doctors referred her to PAM Health Warm Springs Rehabilitation Hospital of Northeast San Antonio.
When Mrs. Carpenter arrived at PAM Health, her muscles were uncoordinated and weakened, so she was unable to walk or control her arms/hands. Through the care and expertise of our physical and occupational therapy teams and Mrs. Carpenter’s own hard work, she made tremendous progress during her stay at PAM Health. She regained control and use of her arms and hands to the point where she could dress herself again. Plus, she learned to walk again. The first time she walked with a walker since her surgery was a major highlight of her recovery, as she exceeded everyone’s expectations for her goals. Our wonderful therapists helped Mrs. Carpenter as she relearned walking.
Some of the goals Mrs. Carpenter achieved at PAM Health are:
- Walking again
- Regained use and control of arms and hands
- Caring for herself again
Mrs. Carpenter looks forward to cooking, gardening, traveling, and returning to her home in the Philippines. We’re so proud of you, Mrs. Carpenter!
Mrs. Carpenter had an overwhelmingly positive experience during her stay at PAM Health. She appreciated how well-coordinated her care was between back-to-back therapy sessions and that our therapists developed a personal relationship with her to ensure she was informed and her needs and goals met. Mrs. Carpenter also said that her nurses and CNAs were great and that everyone was always positive, encouraging, and motivating, helping her get better each day.
