Losing a limb immediately alters your mobility, ability to perform certain activities and daily life. Many patients also struggle with their self-image and basic self-care following an amputation. Post-amputation rehabilitation gives you time, space and resources to recover after surgery.
At PAM Health our team of medical experts comes from a range of specialties to assist your recovery after losing a limb. Our goal is to help you achieve your highest level of independent function while also equipping you with resources to help you integrate back into your life and community.
Amputation is the surgical removal of a limb or portion of a limb and is most often needed due to trauma or to control an underlying disease, such as a tumor or gangrene. Our Amputation Rehabilitation Program helps you feel less alone during your journey with limb loss while helping you return to your highest level of function and independence. The overall goal is to improve your quality of life — physically, emotionally, and socially.
Occupational Therapy and Resources for Amputees
Our comprehensive Amputation Rehabilitation Program aims to meet the needs of each patient we serve. We encourage active involvement, both from the individual who has experienced amputation and their family or support system.
We begin the rehabilitation process by creating an individualized treatment plan. Each stage of your unique program seeks to promote mobility and independence, reduce pain, assist with healing and care of the amputation site, improve self-esteem, and ultimately see you reintegrate into your everyday life. A more detailed look:
Acute post-surgical: Immediately following your surgery, our specialized physicians and nurses help treat underlying medical conditions while focusing on wound healing, pain management, and emotional support.
Pre-prosthetic: Before receiving your prosthetic, we will focus on strengthening and endurance training. You will also be evaluated and thoroughly prepared for prosthetic use and have a consultation with a prosthetist.
Prosthetic training: Once fitted with your prosthetic, we will help you adjust to wearing and using the device as you improve functional mobility and get used to performing daily activities.
Psychosocial services: We offer therapy administered by licensed clinicians to help you adjust to the emotional and psychological aspects of limb loss, including the development of healthy coping strategies. Dietary counseling is also provided to ensure continued health.
Community integration: We provide you with a home and worksite analysis to determine if you need further training or job modification to reintegrate into your job or community.
Post-discharge services: Following your discharge from our program, we provide continued services, including comprehensive outpatient therapy and support groups for you and your family members.
