Overview

Amputation Rehabilitation
at PAM Health

Losing a limb immediately alters your mobility, ability to perform certain activities and daily life. Many patients also struggle with their self-image and basic self-care following an amputation. Post-amputation rehabilitation gives you time, space and resources to recover after surgery.

At PAM Health, our team of medical experts comes from a range of specialties to assist your recovery after losing a limb. Our goal is to help you achieve your highest level of independent function while also equipping you with resources to help you integrate back into your life and community.

Specialty Care

Long-Term Acute Care Hospitals

For patients who have undergone a limb amputation due to trauma, vascular disease, diabetes complications, or infection, an LTACH provides specialized, extended care to manage medical needs and prepare for the next steps in rehabilitation.

Advanced Wound Care and Infection Prevention

Proper wound care is essential for healing and preventing complications after amputation. LTACHs can provide specialized wound management, intravenous antibiotics, and close monitoring and medical supervision.

Pain Management and Medication Optimization

Post-amputation pain, including phantom limb pain and nerve pain, can be challenging. LTACHs provide comprehensive pain management and medication adjustment and monitoring.

Early Rehabilitation and Mobility Training

LTACHs work with patients to promote early mobility to help patients regain strength and transition to the next level of care.

Nutritional Support for Healing and Strength

Proper nutrition is crucial for wound healing, maintaining muscle mass, and overall recovery.

Approach

PAM’s Specialized Approach to
Amputation Care

Our comprehensive Amputation Rehabilitation Program aims to meet the needs of each patient we serve. We encourage active involvement, both from the individual who has experienced amputation and their family or support system.

We begin the recovery process by creating an individualized treatment plan. Each stage of your unique program seeks to promote mobility and independence, reduce pain, assist with healing and care of the amputation site, improve self-esteem, and ultimately see you reintegrate into your everyday life.

Inpatient
Amputation Rehab

For those who have just had an amputation, inpatient care may be the best option. This form of rehabilitation focuses on working with patients in a more structured environment to promote wound healing and physical recovery.

The goal is to help you return home being as independent and productive as possible.

Outpatient
Amputation Rehab

After returning home, recent amputees may benefit from prosthetic training to improve balance, coordination, and strength. Outpatient rehabilitation allows patients to come to our hospital for a few hours of treatment during the day and return home.
Comprehensive outpatient therapy is also available to patients who want to maintain or enhance their recovery after inpatient rehab. Along with this, we also offer patient and family member support groups.
