Reason for Admission: Inpatient and outpatient therapy following craniotomy for metastatic brain tumor
Hospital: PAM Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Westminster
Karl Nance has worked his whole career as a plumber, a job that he has enjoyed and in which he has found fulfillment. He was independent and active, enjoying golf in his free time. The discovery of a brain tumor and the revelation that it was metastatic changed everything for Mr. Nance. He underwent a craniotomy to remove the brain tumor, and the surgery left him with severe mobility and cognitive deficits. Mr. Nance had heard positive feedback about PAM Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Westminster in the community, and he came to us from the acute care hospital for an inpatient stay then outpatient therapy once he discharged home.
Mr. Nance’s biggest challenges include learning how to walk unassisted again and improving his cognition. He worked diligently during inpatient and outpatient therapy with our physical, occupational, and speech therapy teams to rebuild his strength, mobility, and independence. Every accomplishment, big or small, pushed him to keep going, as did our compassionate, expert therapists. “Every therapist had their own unique way of challenging me,” Mr. Nance said. A breakthrough moment for Mr. Nance occurred when he was able to squeeze his hand again. That accomplishment symbolized a significant milestone in restoring his strength and independence in using his hands for everyday tasks again.
“You can see in their eyes how much the therapists care and love what they do.”
-Karl Nance
While Mr. Nance continues with outpatient therapy into 2026, he is grateful to be working alongside our team of therapists, who he called “a gift from God.” “You can see in their eyes how much they care and love what they do,” Mr. Nance said. He has especially appreciated the friendship he has built with his speech therapist Lauren.
Mr. Nance has faced the shock of his life-altering diagnosis and its after-effects with courage, determination, and resilience, and we are honored to be walking this road with him!
